Broadway Construction Projects – Current and Upcoming

The borough was made aware of some misinformation circling on social media regarding the current and upcoming Broadway construction projects. While the intent is to share information once a firmer timeline is established with the many stakeholders, here are some facts regarding the work. It is important to note that the Borough’s portion of the projects were funded with GRANTS and not local tax dollars.

1) PennDOT has awarded the contract to mill and overlay (pave) Broadway from 5 points up to the top of Gulff’s Hill. The contract was awarded to Hansen Aggregate and is public information on the PennDOT site. The EARLIEST work can start would be April. Coordination meeting with PennDOT next week…

2) The BOROUGH was awarded a 2019 MTF Grant of $1mil to complete curb and sidewalk upgrades on BOTH sides of Broadway. Phase 1 starts at the Bethlehem line and moves westbound to Lynn. Our hope is to apply for another MTF grant to finish Broadway in Phase 2.

3) PennDOT is responsible for ADA ramps. Since the Borough already is going to be doing curb and sidewalk, PennDOT is paying the Borough to include ADA ramps in the scope of work.

4) The Borough was awarded a TASA Grant from PennDOT to renovate the pedestrian crossing (NOT the intersection) at Broadway and Delaware. Since the catholic school is no longer open, the school zone signs are no longer compliant and must be replaced with a pedestrian crossing. In a perfect world, UGI’s contractor would replace the gas lines around the same time our contractor completes curb and sidewalk. PennDOT’s contractor would then mill and overlay, after which we would upgrade the crosswalks. Our world isn’t perfect, especially when you have so many agencies involved, but we remain hopeful. To quote Colin Powell, “perpetual optimism is a force multiplier!”
